Education of the pregnant diabetic has been an integral part of the Eastside MFM Program since 1990. Gestational, type 1, and type 2 diabetics have very different needs during their pregnancy. Tight control is essential so a team approach is used: Perinatologists, ARNP, diabetic nurse educator, perinatal nurse, dietician, and genetic counselor all work together. Initial assessment by the ARNP or perinatologist is performed; patient history and labs are reviewed, education occurs as to how both diabetes affects the pregnancy and how pregnancy affects the disease, and management plan for the pregnancy is developed. Patients sign a contract symbolizing their commitment to work with us to care for the pregnancy. Subsequent visits are every 2 weeks throughout the pregnancy. When necessary, medication is prescribed including insulin and oral medications like Glyburide or Metformin respecting a breast feeding mother’s wishes. Ultrasound and antepartum testing are performed within the MFM unit. The perinatologist works closely with the referring provider to develop a
customized plan for the pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum period.
